So, What Happens Next?
Little Britches Star Trek – Nathan, Vin, JD
Nathan sank down on the boardwalk, ready for a short break. Letting out a deep sigh, he glanced at the two boys who were sitting with him. They had come to the holodeck to have some fun, but something had gone wrong with the program and now they were stuck in Earth’s Old West with no means of escape.
“How are you boys doing?” the concerned doctor asked.
“Good!” JD enthused.
Vin replied, “OK.”
“So, what happens next?” JD asked. So far there had been two attempted bank robberies and a run away stagecoach.
Nathan replied, “I just don’t know.”
Little Britches ATF – Chris, Vin
Chris watched as his son struggled with the words in the book and smiled. When Vin had first come to live with him, he had been malnourished and frequently sick. Chris had started a tradition of reading to the sick boy. Now that he was the one who was sick, Vin felt it only fair that he read to Chris.
Reaching the end of the chapter, Vin looked over at his dad. Noticing Chris looked tired, he asked, “How are you doing?”
“OK,” Chris responded. Seeing Vin about to leave and wanting the boy to stay, he asked, “So, what happens next?”
ATF – Buck, Orrin Travis
“OK,” Travis said slowly, absorbing Buck’s explanation. “So what happened next and how did both Chris and Ezra wind up unconscious and in the hospital?”
Buck winced inwardly. He’d told a lot of tales in his day and briefly contemplated making something up since there was no way Travis would believe the truth. “Well,” he said, dragging out the word, “you see, this is where things get a little complicated. It involved a poodle, a red sweater, a chunk of blue ice, a special request and a cellphone…”
Travis pinched the bridge of his nose, squeezing his eyes shut and muttering, “Why am I not surprised?”
Old West – Josiah, JD
JD settled his end of the beam in place and grinned at his friend. He felt honored that Josiah had asked him to help out around the church. The young sheriff had even made an effort to curb his normally boisterous questions. “OK. So, what happens next?” he asked eagerly.
Josiah mopped his brow and smiled at his helper. The boy had proven to be an industrious worker and they had accomplished more than Josiah had thought possible. While JD was ready to continue, he had had enough. Walking over, Josiah dropped an arm over JD’s shoulders and replied, “Now I buy you a beer.”
Runaways – Ezra, Nathan
With Vin and JD both out of town for a few days, it had fallen to Ezra, Nathan and Josiah to watch the boys. Josiah was currently patrolling so Ezra and Nathan had given in to the boys’ request to play capture the flag.
Nathan eyed the trap warily. He wasn’t sure he agreed with Ezra’s plan, but the two boys had proven elusive and were winning the game. Ezra had decided that it was time for the two of them to rely on their knowledge, experience and cunning. “OK. So what happens next?” Nathan asked quietly.
“Now we wait,” Ezra said, settling down.
Little Britches Old West – Buck, JD
Buck knew they had planned to do this together, but Chris and Vin were delayed and Travis wouldn’t be back for a month or more. Much as he and JD wanted the other two to be there, he couldn’t wait. Signing his name, he watched with pride as JD printed his and then Travis signed off on the document. All the butterflies that had been living in his stomach evaporated as true joy filled his being. It was now legal. He was JD’s father. “It’s official now,” Buck whispered to his son.
“OK,” JD agreed, a huge smile on his face. “So, what happens next?”
Six faces stared in disbelief at the seventh.
“What do you mean we’ve been cancelled?” Vin Tanner asked.
“We can’t be cancelled!” JD protested, turning to Buck to back him.
Buck just looked at JD with sad eyes. “’Fraid so, Kid,” he confirmed, knowing Chris wouldn’t joke about this.
“JD, son,” Josiah said, his blue eyes resigned and sorrowful. “It’s a normal part of fictional television existence. Eventually all shows get cancelled or go off the air.”
“Best accept it, JD,” Nathan said.
“Indeed,” Ezra agreed.
“OK,” JD accepted dejectedly. “So what happens next?”
A collective shudder ran through the group, as Chris stated, “Fanfiction.”
