Due By Noon
“I’ve got it!” JD announced, excitement and relief in his voice as he picked a piece of paper up off the printer and headed toward Chris’ office.
Exchanging curious looks, the other five men quickly followed.
“What have you got?” Chris asked, setting his pen aside and looking up at the young man.
Passing the paper to their team leader, JD explained, “I’ve got a lead on Carson.”
“Henry Carson?” Ezra asked, impressed.
“The one and only,” JD replied, a broad grin on his face.
Vin had been watching Chris’ reaction to the information and was trying to make sense of the expression on the blond’s face. “What’s it say?” he asked, quietly.
Looking from the paper to the sharpshooter and then to the young computer expert, he cleared his throat. “Well,” he began, “It would appear that Mr. Carson had a burning need to see “Doom” this weekend.”
Silence fell in the room. “Doom?” Buck asked, baffled.
Nodding his head, JD confirmed, “ ‘Doom’. He rented it at the video store on 3rd.”
“A prophetic choice of movie titles,” Josiah observed, a smile on his face.
“Yep,” Vin agreed, returning the grin.
“We found him by his movie card?” Ezra asked in disbelief.
Nathan just shook his head.
“We’ll stake out the store,” Chris ordered, ignoring the disbelief and questions. It didn’t matter how they tracked him down, just so long as they got him. “When he goes to return the movie, we’ll nab him. Let’s move this into the conference room so we can nail down the details,” he commanded, rising from his seat and reaching for the Carson file.
Two days later Josiah and Vin were sitting in a car across from the video store. It was a few minutes after noon when they spotted their quarry walking up to the drop-off.
Exiting the car, the two ATF agents had Henry Carson up against the wall before he had a chance to run.
Vin checked for hidden weapons while Josiah read the prisoner his Miranda rights. Tanner had just finished putting the handcuffs around Carson’s wrists when a gasp sounded to their right.
Seeing a woman approaching the store, with a video in hand and a puzzled look on her face, Josiah grinned and advised, “When they say the movie is due by noon, they mean it.” Then, with a nod of his head, Sanchez walked across the street to open the back door for their prisoner.
“Ma’am,” Vin greeted as he pulled Carson away from the wall and walked him over to the waiting car.
