Quiet Moments Of Reflection – 2

She sat back and twirled the hat around her fingers, a smile playing across her face. She had heard all the cracks about her name, had endured the teasing and questioning looks. But for some reason this simple gift, one that would have normally garnered her scorn, one she would most likely have to send back per regulations, instead provided a certain amount of comfort.

No one had ever gotten her a fedora before. “Just like Sam Spade of the movies,” she said quietly.

Running a finger along the brim. She glanced at the note enclosed. “Thank you so much for finding my daughter,” the note read. “Truly you are a great detective, just like your namesake.”

She smiled. Not a detective, but the sentiment behind the gift was truly appreciated. She recalled the scene when mother and daughter had been reunited. It was resolutions like this one that kept her sane, that made the job worthwhile.

“You’re welcome,” she whispered, a smile curving her lips as she carefully placed the hat on her head, leaned back and propped her feet on the desk before her.
